Movie Review: Vijay's 'Sura'

Movies, May 1: All the pre-release hype and publicity-glitz surrounding Vijay’s landmark 50th film notwithstanding, Vijay has once again sent a message loud and clear: despite the no-show of his past films in ‘Kuruvi’, ‘Villu’ and ‘Vettaikkaran’, he continues his sojourn on the (lifeless) commercial path. In fact, the plot (or the absence of it) of ‘Suraa’ is even more than the torture his fans and others had to endure in ‘Kuruvi’, ‘Villu’ and ‘Vettaikkaran’!

Suraa (Vijay) is the favourite ‘son-of-the-soil’ of a fishing hamlet Yaazh Nagar. The story is about how Suraa manages to save the fishermen from the clutches of a money-hungry minister who wants to usurp the entire hamlet for his own good. Whenever he finds time off from his noble mission, Suraa gets to gyrate his hips with a dull-headed heroine (her character, of course!) Tamannaah in scenic locations.

Vadivelu is also there to provide some funny movements, probably a bit of a relief to the audience who doesn’t have much of entertainment. Saving innocent people from a villain isn’t something an MGR or a Rajni hadn’t done. As Tamil film audience, we have no ‘legal’ right to expect any new plot from the film makers. But one would like to have a gripping narration with some interesting and credible scenes. Raajkumar appears to have slipped up badly in this department. His main intention appears to be to show the hero as a kind of ‘invincible’ super-human who could do anything and everything, giving the commodity called ‘logic’ a big bye-bye. Nor has Raajkumar bothered about screenplay, as a result of which none of the sequences stay in the memory after you exit the cinema hall.

Vijay’s dancing is excellent and defies gravity to literally ‘fly around’ at will while bashing up the baddies. Too many ‘punch’ dialogues spoil the party as Vijay talks about the rights of Tamil fishermen and about the Sri Lankan Tamils’ problems. As if Vijay’s self-boasting isn’t enough, even the villain is made to ‘praise’ Vijay! When the District Collector speaks ‘highly’ of Vijay likening him to a volcano waiting to erupt and emit lava, it only makes the audience break into peels of laughter. All Vijay has done in his fiftieth film in 17 years is that he has ensured that even the lyrics of the duet songs are written in praise of him!

Vadivelu manages to give some relief to us while the picture-perfect Tamannaah, currently on a high in Tamil films, reveals her curvaceous figure in song sequences and dances (s)exposingly to the delight of the fans.

Dev Gill looks majestic but is out of place in a role that has no scope for him to perform. Mani Sharma’s numbers are foot-tapping but remind us of some recently heard Telugu songs. Cinematography is good.

Vijay utters a dialogue in the film which goes like this: ‘there is a crowd behind me which is ready to die for him’. In turn, why can’t you provide them with a clean entertainer Mr. Vijay?

SURA, THE much awaited film starring Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Tamanna has been released today on April 30, 2010. Directed by S.P Rajkumar and produced by Sangili Murugan, Sura is the 50th film of Tamil actor Vijay.

Vijay's 50th film Sura produced under the banner of Sun Pictures is anticipated to be a blockbuster film. Sura is an action packed thriller with entertaining roles being played by Vijay and Tamanna.Sura music is already a hit and has appealed the listeners a lot.

The story of this action film has been set in a fisherman colony wherein Sura (Vijay) plays a fisherman who fights against the injustice being done to the fishermen community by some goons. Apart from Vijay- Tamanna in lead role Sura has Pasupathi, Vadivelu and Riyaz Khan in supporting roles.

The Censor Board has given 'U' Certificate to the film and Sura has released in 112 centers in total which itself is a record making number in film Industry.

So, the record breaking film Sura is a must watch for Vijay fans who will surely have a treat watching the thrill filled action stunts in the film

Nowadays actors who always prefer super action hero roles seems to be transformed slowly to normal and natural roles. At the same time superstars like Rajinikanth are trying their level best with convincing roles like Sivaji and sci - fiction Endhiran with maximum entertainment guaranty.

But there are few actors, like Vijay, still living in the world of myths and not ashamed for giving half baked films like Kuruvi, Villu, Vettaikkaran, Sura and cheating the so called die hard fans continuously.
Sura, the 50th film of Vijay is surely a disaster in his 19 years old career. The story is as old as hills and the sequences are stale and repeated. Vadivelu is the only plus point in this two and half hour horrible experience. Another important point is, S P Rajkumar, who always made some B grade films, wasted a golden opportunity to establish himself as a front line entertainment filmmaker.

The story goes like this...

Sura is a good hearted young man in a Fishery Village called Yaazh Nagar (Yaazh is the name of Srilankan city Jaffna!?). He does good things to the villagers. He fights for the rights of the villagers. Every one loves his mischievous, humour sensed activities. Simply, he is the 'Chella Pillai' of the village!

He wishes to marry a girl only after solving all the problems of fishermen in the village. One day Tamanna try to kill herself near the village's sea side, due to loss of her pet dog! As usual Vijay comes to her rescue and instead of jumping into the sea, in the very next scene, Tammu jumps to his heart and goes for a duet in some beautiful locations.

In the mean time, Dev Gil, a local minister try to vacate the village and occupy the entire land. Knowing this Vijay starts his fight with him. At a stage, Minister plans to destroy Vijay. How Vijay escapes from the plot and save the people and join with Tamanna is the predictable, boring climax!

Nothing special to mention in Vijay's action, stunts and even his comical scenes irritate a lot. The only change from his earlier flicks is...his bubbly face! As usual he delivers half a dozen meaningless punch dialogues, in the climax some peppy dance numbers with Tamanna.

For Tamanna, it is one more film in her acting
career... Thats all!

Vadivelu tries to save the film till the interval. But the post interval sequences (Except the one with Vennira Aadai Moorthy track) totally kills the interest of the viewers. Manisharma gives the Tamil coating for all his 5 songs which took place earlier in some Telugu films like Billa!

S P Rajkumar totally failed to cover even some of the die hard Vijay fans with his unimpressive narration, expected twists and amateur direction.

Sura Movie Stills : Vijay's 50th Film | Vijay + Tamanna | NEW!

It’s well known fact that Sun Pictures has decided to release Vijay’s Sura as a special treat for this summer vacation. Now we hear this from the closer sources that the film’s audio is likely to get launched on March 19.

Sura is expected to be a special film for Vijay fans as it happens to be his 50th film. Initially, producer Sangali Murugan started off this project and later Sun Pictures acquired rights over the film.

As of now, major portions of the film is said to be completed while Vijay is busy shooting for a song along with three hot models from Mumbai. According to the sources, the song is canned in the backdrops of grandiloquent sets in Anumondhai (near Pondicherry) at a cost Rs.45Lakhs. Mani Sharma has scored music for the film and it’s worth mentioning that his previous albums with Vijay have worked magic at audio markets.

Kollywood’s latest heartthrob Tamanna stars opposite Vijay in female lead while Magadheera fame Dev Gill takes on the role of baddie. S.P. Rajkumar has wielded megaphone for this film and handled story, screenplay and dialogues as well.

We know that Ilayathalapathy Vijay has signed a movie with Aascar Ravichandran, which will be the Vijay’s 51st film. Vijay’s next movie will direct by Jeyam Raja, will reportedly be called Thalapathi.

Thalapath was the title of the Rajinikanth-Mammootty blockbuster movie and released in 1991. Thalapathi movie produced by G.V.Films and directed by Mani Ratnam.

Sources say that the similarity ends with the title. While Thalapath movie dealt with the friendship between two gangsters and the new Vijay movie will be a family entertainer with loads of action. None other than Asin, it is being said, will star opposite Vijay.

Currently Vijay is happy that his 50th film Sura under Rajkumar’s direction has shaped up well and there is heavy competition among big production houses to purchase it outright.
